Common Braces FAQs Answered

The thought of getting braces can be worrisome. Do braces hurt? How long does treatment take? Are there any foods I can’t eat? The reality is, braces are not nearly as bad as they’re made out to be. Here are some answers and clarifications to frequently asked questions about braces.

Do Braces Hurt?

The most common fear among patients is that braces will hurt. However, generally they do not. Soreness may occur after some visits, but simple pain medications such as Tylenol can ease any discomfort. We tell patients, “It does not have to hurt to work!”

Are There Any Foods I Cannot Eat?

Yes. Avoid foods such as hard candy, raw vegetables, ice and generally sticky foods. By doing so, you can avoid emergency appointments to repair broken or damaged braces.

How Often Should I Brush?

Patients should brush after each meal and before going to bed. In addition to brushing four times a day, flossing is a must.

How Often Will I Have Appointments?

Appointments are typically scheduled every 5-10 weeks. However, some patients may require more specific monitoring. In those cases, we will schedule more often. Generally speaking, it varies by patient.

How Long Will it Take to Complete My Treatment?

The average time frame a person is in braces lasts approximately 18-24 months. However, treatment time varies by patient. This is because each patient is unique, and the length of treatment depends on the specific orthodontic problem.

How Much Will It Cost?

It is impossible to give an exact cost for treatment prior to examination. We will cover the exact cost, financial options, and review your insurance policy during the examination.
